Cat 102. SELF PORTRAIT, 1981. 15’’x24’’

When I draw I’m in control. Painting is more like juggling.

I began drawing in a scribbly hacked-at way; lots of marks and movement.
(cat 101, TREES and cat 102, SELF POTRAIT in 1981).

On the Royal Academy Post Graduate Diploma course students had to spend the first three months in the life room drawing the human figure.
After a few weeks I realized that I could happily spend years drawing the human figure.

Cat 101. TREES. DRAWING. 20"x227"

Norman Blamey RA taught in the life class one day every week and he asked me why I used three lines where one would do? It was amongst the best advice I have ever been given.

My drawings became spare precise and plotted and clinical.

I began to draw from the casts of Greek and Roman statues in the corridors at the Royal Academy school.

Drawing became the armature within a painting; something that I can go back to when I loose the forms that I am trying to build on the canvas.
